By Rose McSweeney, Year 11 Faith Captain, Catherine McAuley College
Attending the Sydney Ignite Youth Conference in the July school holidays was one of the most powerful experiences of my faith journey so far. Held over four days in the Diocese of Broken Bay (Sydney), the conference brought together more than 2,500 young people, leaders and families from across the country and I felt so lucky to be part of it.
The theme this year was “The Light” (John 1:5: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it”) and, from the very first rally, I could feel that light all around me. The atmosphere was electric, filled with energy, joy and a deep sense of connection. There were inspiring talks, presenters speaking about their own faith journeys, vibrant worship and meaningful prayer experiences that really spoke to me.
I loved the chance to listen to keynote presentations (including one from Fr Rob Galea), to dive into workshops that challenged me to think more deeply about my faith, and the music and Masses were unforgettable. Even the simple moments like sharing food, laughing with new friends, or reflecting in quiet prayer made an impact on me.
A real bonus was getting to share this experience with my mum and a close friend from school, Chloe. Being on the journey together made it even more special and strengthened both our faiths in ways we’ll never forget.
By the end of the weekend, I felt renewed, inspired and ready to carry that light back into the St Kilian’s Parish and Catherine McAuley. The Ignite conference shed light upon how I can continue to make a difference for myself and others.
If you're looking for something more—more meaning, more connection, more of God, I can’t recommend Ignite enough. There’s another conference coming up in Brisbane this September and I encourage you to go. Bring your friends and an open heart. You’ll find something special there, just like I did.
Another exciting opportunity, a little closer to home, is the Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF), happening in Melbourne in late November to early December. It promises to be another wonderful faith experience, and I’m particularly excited to participate. I’d love to share this journey with others too; it’s a chance to grow, connect and encounter God in a powerful way.
'Ignite' isn’t just a conference. It’s an experience that stays with you. And I’m so grateful to have been part of it.
